Progress Report


1. Name of the Cooperation Area: Tourism Cooperation

2. Prime/ Co-Prime Mover Countries: Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Pakistan

3. Date of first activity organized: 22-24 May 2003 -- 1st ACD Tourism Business Forum, Phuket, Thailand

4. Progress since ACD 5 (May 2006):

  • Roadmap for Tourism Cooperation was endorsed by the 5th ACD Ministers’ Meeting in May 2006 in Qatar to be a framework for collaboration between member countries. To advance this framework for ACD tourism cooperation, member countries have been requested to volunteer leading cooperation areas under the Roadmap.
  • Four member countries have offered to lead areas of cooperation under the Roadmap, namely
  •         - Sri Lanka and Cambodia     Tourism for poverty alleviation
            - Indonesia                            Human resource development
            - Thailand                              SMEs development

  • There are currently 3 other cooperation areas – tourism investment opportunity, safe/secure destination and sustainable tourism which yet have any lead country. The tourism co-prime movers have continued to encourage member countries to consider taking lead in any of the above areas to help concretize the tourism cooperation for the benefits of all member countries.
  • 5. Difficulties encountered/ Issues of concern (if applicable):

  • ACD tourism co-prime movers wish to receive more responses – comments, recommendations, or offer to take leading roles from member countries which are essential to advancing the cooperation.
  • 6. Future activities:

  • India has proposed to host the 4th ACD Business Tourism in 2007. Said meeting is likely to focus on deliberating issues concerning Roadmap for Tourism Cooperation, particularly on plans to materialize the cooperation.
  • 7. Issue(s) requiring Ministers’ decision or endorsement:
    Ministers may:          

  • Take note of extensive developments in the tourism cooperation area which include continuous activities over the years, endorsement of framework for collaboration i.e. Roadmap on Tourism Cooperation, and volunteering member countries to steer some key cooperation areas; and
  • Encourage member countries to step up their role to move this cooperation area forward according to the timeline set in the Roadmap.
