4. Progress Since ACD5:

The 3rd Dialogue on Environmental Education

Japan hosted the 3rd Dialogue on Environmental Education on 14th and 15th June 2006 in Sendai Japan. 44 participants from 19 ACD member countries and 3 international organizations attended the dialogue, and some 150 attended its open forum. The dialogue was held under the theme “United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UN/DESD).” Participants also joined site visit to Sendai and Matsushima, Miyagi, to observe community’s effort such as waster recycling project and cleanup project of Matsushima Bay.

DESD is an initiative proposed by Japan’s former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at Johannesburg Summit in 2002. At the 3rd dialogue, Japan introduced its domestic implementation scheme for the UN/DESD. Participants from other ACD member countries also introduced each country’s effort on UN/DESD. The dialogue provided an opportunity for ACD member countries to renew their determination to further promote education for sustainable development in each country.

5. Future activities:

The 4th Dialogue on Environmental Education

Based on the General Discussions on Environmental Education in the previous dialogues, the focus of the project will be narrowing down to individual topics from this year. Japan will host the 4th Dialogue on Environmental Education on 26th and 27th June 2007 in Kitakyushu, Japan under the theme of “Environmental Education as a measure to address the global warming.”

The dialogue will be convened to reach common understanding of Asian countries to address the issue of global warming as their own problem. The dialogue will also underscore the necessity to promote public awareness and enlightenment of this issue. Participants will also have a chance to discuss possible ways of Asian countries to join “Post Kyoto Protocol scheme.” Japan expects active participation of ACD member countries to the dialogue.
