ACD meet to spur economy: Kasuri

DOHA • The healthy economic growth witnessed by several Asian countries has widened the opportunities and cooperation in the continent, Khurshid Mahmoud Kasuri, Pakistan's Foreign Minister, said here yesterday. The 5th Ministerial Meeting for Asia Cooperation Dialogue, he said, was expected to bolster such cooperation.
Kasuri, speaking to reporters said, his country last year had witnessed a 8.4 per cent growth in its economy while China had recorded a rise of 9.1 per cent, while Japan has been an economic powerhouse since long. Neighbor India and other countries too, he pointed out, had witnessed similar growths and hence, the time was ripe for cooperation between different Asian countries in various fields.
He said, the ACD was the only forum that brings together all Asian countries. "This conference gives us the opportunity to signify our Asian identity," he added.
Meanwhile, ministers attending the ACD which opened at the Four Seasons Doha yesterday, discussed nine projects proposed for development in the continent, sources close to the forum disclosed. These included agriculture, e-education, energy, environmental education, financial cooperation, IT cooperation, natural disasters, poverty alleviation and tourism. The meeting was to encourage prime movers and co-movers in these sectors to meet and work for future action. Indonesia and the Philippines.
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, Mahdi Mustafawi, meanwhile, had a packed schedule in Doha meeting his counterparts from various countries in sidelines of the conference. A meeting between the delegations of China and Japan was also held at the venue, the Japanese ambassador to Qatar, Masahiko Horie, disclosed.
